A Personal Experience: The Cave of Life
One summer, I had the opportunity, as a counselor, to go caving at Shepherd's Spring. During the climb I had to reach a ledge on the opposite side of four feet of air. The gap wasn't terribly wide, but the ground was slick with clay and footing was hard to come by. One of my fellow counselors was braced across the space, with hand outstretched. All I had to do was to take his hand and use his support until I could find a firm place to set my feet. I was confident, however, and would rather have taken my life in my own hands than trust it to someone else, so I reached out across the way and grabbed a rock handhold on the other side, and held there until I could gain a foothold. Only when I got to the far side did I realize how foolish I had been.
The support that my friend would have given was far more secure than anything I could have found on my own. His legs were braced against the rocks, and nothing could have pulled him from his position. But, my pride had refused to accept someone else's help. God is like my friend, set securely in his place, with an outstretched hand, ready to help me bridge any chasm that I find in my path. In times like these, we have to swallow our pride in order to allow God to help us, and that is not always easy. God does have great plans for each of us, but he does not expect us to carry them out on our own.
